Paula was raised in Awhitu, Opōtiki and Whangārei. She began her career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, working in the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo, before returning to Whangārei to work at the Department of Conservation and for Whangārei hapū in Treaty claims administration. Admitted to the Bar in 2016 Paula worked at Henderson Reeves until May 2026, when she moved home to join the Māori Land and Business Team at JB Morrison Lawyers.
